Online resources for Woodland Owners

I was recently asked which websites I find most valuable for Minnesota woodland owners. That is a great question.

My best recommendation is to go directly to My Minnesota Woods curated by the Univerity of Minnesota Forestry extension https://extension.umn.edu/natural-resources/my-minnesota-woods. It is a wealth of information for private woodland owners. Sign up for the monthly email newsletter first, then explore the topics and videos.

The best place to start is the managing your woodlands topic: https://extension.umn.edu/forestry/managing-woodlands

If you are interested in a class about forest stewardship, I recommend the Minnesota Woodland Steward program https://extension.umn.edu/forestry/minnesota-woodland-steward-program. It is comprehensive and hands-on. A perfect place to have your questions answered.

If you love a good book about managing your woods, a free practical guide to woodland stewardship is available here: https://open.lib.umn.edu/woodlandstewardship/

The Minnesota DNR also publishes free woodland owner guides. They are tailored to the specific geography and conditions of your woodlands. You can find them here: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/woodlands/index.html

I also recommend joining the Minnesota Forestry Association https://www.minnesotaforestry.org/ They publish the Minnesota Woodlands newsletter and are focused on the needs of the private woodland owner.

Enjoy your woodland stewardship journey!
